How to Optimize Your Website for Search Engines

Frances RoySeptember 10, 2019

We know that the phrase “search engine optimization” can sound intimidating, but we’re breaking down how you can easily optimize your organization’s website in a few simple steps. In today’s digital age, it’s crucial for an organization’s website to work quickly and properly, give the user appropriate and relevant information and give valuable content that encourages users to stay on the site. Here are the best ways to ensure that your website is optimized so your audience can easily find and navigate your business’ site.

Ensure your website is mobile-friendly.

First and foremost, businesses need to make sure that their website is responsive on mobile devices. According to Statista, more than half of all website traffic is generated through cell phones. If your website is not mobile-friendly, now is the time to change that.

Do a site audit.

Go through each and every page of your website to make sure all information is still up-to-date and relevant to your organization. During the audit, we also suggest making sure all page links work, and either removing or updating the ones that don’t. Making these simple changes alone can work wonders for the length of time people spend on your site and the number of pages they view.

Update page titles.

Once you’ve ensured everything is working properly, we suggest making all of your page titles succinct, relevant and likely to be searched. For example, the page title for this blog is “search engine optimization”. It tells what the webpage is about, and the phrase would likely be searched by someone looking for SEO tips.

Use keywords.

Keywords are simply phrases within your website’s content that will help your customers find your website. They are the words or phrases that are your audience is likely to search when looking for your business. A gym may use the phrase “fitness center”, a jeweler may use “engagement rings”. Keywords can vary in length, but should be used multiple times throughout your website.

Consistently provide new content.

If you only implement one suggestion from this list, this is the one to complete! Consistently posting quality content is key in getting noticed in search engines. We suggest publishing relevant blog posts at least weekly to your site. These posts should include keywords, links to other pages on your website, links to other websites, and an appropriate title.
